Due to the Easter Holiday last Sunday, we decided to push back this topic until this Sunday 4/27, so join us tomorrow night for a great discussion on how relationships affect educational success.
Where does the change, growth and improvement that we all seek in education actually begin. Is it the math improvements, is it developing literacy, is it aligning our work to common core or improving our graduation rates. Although all of those areas are important and definitely affect the overall success of our schools and our students. I would argue that those numbers are directly related to the relationships that we build with our students, teachers and fellow administrators. When we create a safe, secure environment where we are able to focus on the learning, then and only then can we achieve to our greatest potential. Have you ever worked in a school where you had this feeling of safety and being part of a team vs working in a school where this feeling was not present. I would venture a guess that the school that has the feeling of community/family also was the school that witnessed the greater success. Join us this Sunday night at 8 PM as we look closely at how relationships influence and affect all of us in the field of education.

I have been a principal for 13 years. Test scores were always my priority and the schools I was over always showed improvement. 5 years ago I had a paradigm shift where we focused on relationships and kids first. The high school where I was at went from 4000 office referrals to 745. Test score went through the roof and our school rose to number 8 in our state. The biggest thing was how the community changed. Parents, students, and teachers began to love the place. It's all about relationships.

Rhett, Thanks for the comment. I could not agree more. My focus has always been about building the relationships, creating the culture and allowing the growth to happen. I have already seen some tremendous growth at the Transformation HS I lead in RI. If we connect with our students and create a safe place for them to learn, then they will come and we will have the opportunity to help them improve.
