As we move forward with the implementation of new standards like CCSS or Next Generation Science Standards, many states are focused on seeing the results from high skates assessments, like PARCC or Smarter Balance.(Summative) However, the real learning and the measurement of that learning happens in a formative way. Summative assessments, or high stakes tests and projects, are what the eagle eye of our profession is fixated on right now, but it is the formative assessment that really makes the difference.

I often reflect back to the days when I was playing sports or even earlier in my career, when I was coaching to think about how formative assessment was happening all of the time. If I was doing something wrong on the field or court the coach would stop me, explain it to me and give me the "why" and then ask me to do it again, except this time make the necessary changes. Are we doing this work in the classroom on a regular basis, or are we just teaching, teaching, teaching and then testing.
