As those of us in the state of Rhode Island finish up with the NECAP Testing period we may have our mind set on Summative Assessment. Summative assessments, or high stakes tests and projects, are what the eagle eye of our profession is fixated on right now, but it is the formative assessment that really makes the difference.
As Rick Wormeli states in this YouTube video about Summative vs Formative Assessment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJxFXjfB_B4, you can grow and learn without summative assessment, but not without formative assessment. I often reflect back to the days when I was playing sports or even earlier in my career, when I was coaching to think about how formative assessment was happening all of the time. If I was doing something wrong on the field or court the coach would stop me, explain it to me and give me the "why" and then ask me to do it again, except this time make the necessary changes. Are we doing this work in the classroom on a regular basis, or are we just teaching, teaching, teaching and then testing. Join us Sunday night at 8 PM on #EdChatRI as we discuss this very important part of the learning process and find out the different ways we can better utilize formative assessment.
