As we start the new school year one of the main areas of focus that we should have for our students and our school is how are we raising the rigor. One of the main expectations set forth by the Common Core State Standards is on increasing the difficulty and expectations for our students, but how exactly do we do that.
What is academic rigor anyhow, the term has been used often as of late, but what is it really and if we truly understand it's meaning what are we doing as educators to increase it. Did we do any work in preparation for the start of the year to set these higher expectations. Is raising the academic rigor all about the amount of homework we are giving our students,or is it about the type of work we are assigning. Is raising the rigor about asking all DOK 3 and 4 questions in class or is it about the way in which we ask questions and the types of answers we accept. Is it about delivering more rigorous instruction or is it about creating a learning environment where students are doing the majority of the work and having great discussions.
Join us Sunday night at 8 PM on #edchatri as we look at how to "Raise the Rigor" in education.
Welcome back to another year of #edchatri. Hopefully everyone has had an amazing summer and had an opportunity to get away, relax and recharge for the very important work that we all do. Whether it was time at the beach, relaxing by the pool, working in the garden, camping or hiking in the woods, summer is always a very needed time in an educators life. Now, that time has come to a close and we find ourselves starting off another school year. What better way to start it off then with #edchatri. As we do every Sunday night during the school year we will join forces and ideas on Sunday's at 8 PM, starting in two days.
The focus of this weeks chat will be "Starting the Year off Right". As the expression goes you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so this next week is very important to setting the tone for the year. What are you going to do as an administrator or teacher to make the Right first impression.
Join us this Sunday at 8 PM for the first #edchatri of the year, WELCOME BACK!!
With only two days until the first #EdChatRI gathering, I am thrilled to say that there are over 60 people who have registered to attend. Registration of course is not required and the event will be an informal gathering of like-minded individuals who have participated in some capacity on the weekly #EdChatRI Sunday chat. If you have not registered and want to, there is still time and here is the link http://www.edchatrisummerparty.eventbrite.com.
As was stated in the invitation the gathering at Chelo's on the Waterfront, will start around 3 PM, due to the fact that the live entertainment begins at 4 PM, this will hopefully assure us some open seats on the lawn near the music. http://www.chelos.com/waterfront/
I would also like to let all of those who ordered the #EdChatRI shirts from Teespring, know that I spoke with the company today and there was an issue with the shipping of the shirts. However, I was contacted and assured by one of the co-founders that the shirts have shipped tonight and will be to each of us by Saturday, so that if you choose to wear it, as I will, to the Sunday gathering, you may do so. I am also happy to mention that due to the delay and difficulty with the shipping we will all be receiving a full refund on our order. Therefore those of us who got the very first edition of the #EdChatRI shirt will be getting it for free.
Finally, I am thrilled to say that the weather for Sunday looks fantastic with mostly sunny and 83 in the forecast. It looks to be a great day. See you there.
