Over the past 15 months #edchatri has changed the face of education by creating a state based weekly educational chat. Modeling our design after other very successful educational chats such as #satchat and the original #edchat, we have created a model that has now been replicated throughout the nation.
With the very hectic lives that we lead in education it is nearly impossible to come together weekly as a state to discuss the very important educational topics that will help improve the work we do for our students, but #edchatri provides us that opportunity. With many topics that apply to education as a whole we are always joined by amazing educators throughout the nation and often even the world of education. Now it is time for us to come together face to face and our small state easily affords us this opportunity.
On August 4th we will be having the first #EdChatRI Summer Party at Chelo's on the Waterfront in Warwick, RI: http://www.chelos.com/waterfront/
You can register for free at: http://edchatrisummerparty.eventbrite.com/
You can also get the Limited Edition of the #EdChatRI shirt and wear it that night so that it will be easy to recognize all of our #EdChatRIers: http://teespring.com/edchatrisummerparty
We would love to see all of our followers, both in and out of state. Rhode Island is beautiful in the summer. Come visit and make a vacation out of it. There we be plenty of great educational minds present from all levels of education, so join us, have a drink, enjoy the live music and finally put a face to the name. There is nothing more exciting in the Twitterverse then finally meeting someone that you may have been conversing with for weeks, months or years. Looking forward to seeing many of you on August 4th.
Together we are "Improving education one TWEET at a time."
As the 2012-13 school year comes to a close. Let's take a moment to look at the year in review and to plan for the summer and school year ahead. As we did last year #edchatri will take the summer off and tonight's chat will be the last one for the year.
We will come back together on the final Sunday in August, the 25th, to begin the new school year. Hopefully, however we will see many of you personally on Sunday August 4th as we come together for the first #EdChatRI Summer party at Chelo's on the Waterfront in Warwick, RI. http://www.edchatrisummerparty.eventbrite.com
Let's discuss what worked well this past year and what we need to improve upon. We will talk about summer PD plans and how we are going to stay connected with our staff throughout the summer. How will technology help us in this work and all of the work we have do do in the future. Lastly, what will our focus be for September to start the year off strong.
Join us one last time this school year for #edchatri, Sunday night at 8 PM.
Digital literacy is the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies. It requires one "to recognize and use that power, to manipulate and transform digital media, to distribute pervasively, and to easily adapt them to new forms". Digital literacy does not replace traditional forms of literacy. It builds upon the foundation of traditional forms of literacy. Digital literacy is the marrying of the two terms digital and literacy; however, it is much more than a combination of the two terms. Digital information is a symbolic representation of data, and literacy refers to the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently, and think critically about the written word. (wikipedia)
Join us on Sunday night on #edchatri @ 8 PM as we take a closer look at exactly what digital literacy means for us and how we can expand the work of literacy through the use of technology. Are you a digital native or would you like to be. Then join many of us who are as we discuss this important topic. Find some great ideas for developing the work we do with technology and walk away with some great links and resources for doing this work to bring digital literacy to our classrooms.

If you had the opportunity to design the next two years of education in your state, what would it look like. In the state of RI we are fortunate to have a commissioner, who was recently rehired for two more years, who is connected and regularly participates in our weekly chat. She is intent on listening and learning from what the great educators from our state have to say about the work we are doing. Even if you come from a state that is not fortunate enough to have the commissioner listening, perhaps with unity and commitment you can make the changes happen.
If you had the opportunity to make the changes you see as necessary for the success of our students, teachers, administrators and the state of education as a whole, what would those changes be and what would it look like. Topics such as evaluation, teaching strategies, formative assessment, preparation for PARCC, technology integration and others will be discussed.
Join us Sunday night at 8 PM on #edchatri as we have this very important conversation and we begin the work to move ourselves and our students forward.
As the year comes quickly to a close there are many obstacles that keep us from accomplishing all of the work that we need to regarding keeping students engaged and keeping ourselves focused on the many tasks at hand.
Does technology offer us any solutions to these problems, do you have any strategies that you implement to close out the year strong and do you ask your students through a survey or other means, how effective this class was for them this past year.
How do we keep our students and ourselves in the game as the year comes to a close, the weather improves and the seniors are no longer in the school. How do we keep them from looking out the window or worse skipping our class or school as a whole.
Finally, what plans do we have for our students and ourselves to so that we can continue our learning throughout the summer and come back ready to move forward next year.
Join us Sunday night at 8 PM on #edchatri as we discuss how we all intend to End the Year Strong.
